Shepard - U2

U2, a band that most people are familiar with would be surprised about the information I discovered while researching them. U2 originated from Dublin in 1976 as a “post-punk” band. Throughout their years of fame the group went through many different sounds and styles of music. Bono who is the lead vocalist and the lead rhythm guitarist was able to change the bands sounds, especially through the effects of his guitar. When the band first formed in 1976 as teenagers, it only took them four years until they signed with Island Records and released their first album, “Boy.” I have attached their live performance of “Boy” when it was first released. Comparing “Boy” to their most recent album, “Songs Of Experience” (also attached) that was released in 2017 showed that the band had a consistent anthemic sound. The band was originally named, “Feedback” in 1977 when they had first started performing at small gigs, shortly after they changed their name again to U2 to have fans question and keep and open mind about the name they chose. U2 was and still is a very popular band, from releasing 14 albums and even having the worlds best selling music to this day, they are continuing to grow and maintain fame.

  1. I think it's really interesting to hear about the origins of a band that is still so popular today! While you were researching them, did you come across why they decided to partner with apple to download their album onto everyone's phones back in 2014? I've never listened to it because I was frustrated that it happened-- but I'm sort of interested in the rational behind that provocative move!

  2. I thought it was frustrating as well having their album download automatically. When Apple released their IPhone 6 the CEO of Apple announced that U2 would perform as well as release their album for free to iPhone users. The automatic download was a way U2's album became the largest release of all time, and creating more publicity and notoriety. It also gave a larger audience a chance to listen to their music.

  3. I recently saw U2 at the TD garden in Boston! My family and I are big fans and have lots of records scattered around the house with their many albums. The concert was very inspirational as they played songs from all of their albums and during some of the songs, expressed the back story as to why they wrote it, along with a terrific backdrop that illuminated the stadium. I never knew that they were originally called "Feedback"!
