Edelman - Kendrick Lamar

When figuring out a current artist that represents the discomfort and transformations of our generation and society I immediately thought of Kendrick Lamar. Not only was Lamar named one of Time magazine's ‘100 most influential people in the world in 2016’, he continues to inspire our generation today with his powerful lyrics and catchy rhythms. Some of Lamar’s songs and powerful lyrics remind me of Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen sang a lot about events and the hardship that Americans had to face during the time of Reagan's presidency. Springsteen contributed a lot to the world around him through the use of his lyrics just like Lamar. Kendrick Lamar’s song “Alright” gives the listener a sense of the violence, and power that some people have towards the black communities. With the upsetting deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and many more, Lamar wanted to lyrically protest the devastating events that were surrounding him. “Alright” became a nationwide song that spoke to many people not only across America but other countries too. Another great song with powerful lyrics is “M.A.A.D City”. In this song, Lamar outlines his childhood and upbringing, while speaking about the circumstances that he faced while growing up. Although I normally breeze past the lyrics and focus mainly on the tune of a song, Kendrick Lamar really catches my attention when I listen to his songs. Lamar is definitely an artist that expresses the concerns of our generation not only today but in many years to come.

  2. I think Kendrick Lamar is such a perfect example of our generation's music today, because while his songs are extremely catchy and easy to love, they also have important lyrics which can be analyzed for further meaning relating to social justice issues.
