With the recent release of the popular sing song movie Mamma Mia, I thought it was timely to write about the band ABBA. With the help of Mamma Mia, I think that most people have heard and can name at least one song by ABBA. ABBA is a Swedish group which started out in the 70’s that produces pop like sounds and beats. A fun fact I found out was that the name ABBA consists of the first letters of all the band members. The four members that started out separate shared their musical knowledge to create ABBA’s greatest hits to name a few, “dancing queen”, and “take a chance on me”. Their first hit was the song “Waterloo” which topped charts all over Europe, due to the help of the Eurovision song contest.
Throughout their careers, the two married couples which made up ABBA divorced. Many people argue that this changed both the lyrics and sounds of some of ABBA’s songs, however, the group still worked together to create even more amazing songs. Later on, ABBA slowed down their production of music and took a “temporary break”. However, with movies and Broadway shows such as Mamma Mia, ABBA’s music was featured and caught the ears of many people. Today, ABBA is still listened to by many people around the world. A recent interview with Dave Grohl (Nirvana) and Jimmy Kimmel showcased Grohl’s love for ABBA as he wore a gold and black ABBA t-shirt. With enthusiasm, he stated that “Everybody loves ABBA”. Attached I have some photos of the band, and one of their iconic songs “Mamma Mia”.
I loved the new Mamma Mia movie. ABBA is a beloved band and their songs are amazing.
ReplyDeleteHow timely you're right! I think it is really interesting how the band's name comes from all of the letters of their own names, I never knew that.
