I shared Elvis Presley singing "Blue Suede Shoes," a song written by Carl Perkins. I have heard this song before but never really paid much attention to it. While I was completing the "Birth of Rock" readings, I was interested in the Million Dollar Quartet - the impromptu jam session with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis. My grandmother is a huge Elvis Presley fan and my Grandfather is a big Johnny Cash fan. Four years ago, when they both turned 70, my family took them to the play, The Million Dollar Quartet, in Chicago. I really enjoyed the play; however, I had no idea of what the Million Dollar Quartet was or its historical significance to rock and roll until I completed the readings for this class. Also, I have always said that I am not a big fan of country music; however, I really enjoyed several of the pieces from the Million Dollar Quartet, most of which have heavy country western influences. "Blue Suede Shoes" was one of the songs recorded during the impromptu jam session by these four musicians.
Million Dollar Quartet is a great show. It ran last summer at Saint Michael's Playhouse with an incredible Noel Carey as Jerry Lee Lewis.
