Benway: 1950s Performer

As I explained in my introduction, I am a country fan.  So, 1950s rock is something that I honestly don't know that much about.  I know the classics like Elvis or Johnny Be Good, but that it.  This assignment was meant for me to expand my knowledge.  When I began my search for a performer, I want to find someone who did more with him fame.   I think I found that in Tony Bennett.  He celebrated his 90th birthday in 2016.  He began his singing career as a teenager serving tables a restaurant.  From there he was able to expand his career and become more.  He enlisted in the army and is not a veteran of World War II.  His good deeds don't stop here.  He also walked with Martin Luther King Jr., became a well-known pacifist who supported many social causes, and has performed for 11 Presidents.

The song that I chose for Tony Bennett was From Rags to Riches depicting a love story.  Where he is basically saying he may be the poorest man in the world, but with the love and affection from this girl he will be rich.  He will have everything he will ever want.  I just liked the story behind the song.

  1. Wonderful singer to this day and a great reminder that rock had to share the charts then - and now - with other styles and genres. The Top 10 best-selling singles of 1956, for example, included hits by Elvis next to hits by decidedly non-rock singers Doris Day and Dean Martin.

  2. I did not know about Tony Bennett before your post! His story of his rise to fame is very humble, and I liked learning about all the good things he did throughout his life.

  3. Tony Bennett is such an amazing singer. I enjoyed reading about his non musical contributions to the world as well. I think that he just has such a sense of jazz in his voice that is so perfect for this song, I love that you chose a piece that was more on the jazz side of this time.

  4. Beautiful song! I love the kind of crooners like Tony and Sinatra, which artists like Michael Bublé are carrying on. I wish Tony Bennet's songs still could have more play, but I now I can always count on hearing his Christmas music :)

  5. Tony Bennet is an outstanding and multitalented artist and Im so glad you got to discover him this week for your 1950s artist. While I know you were focusing on music from the 1950s, if you are looking for a more modern album may I recommend "Cheek to Cheek" which is an album Bennett did with Lady Gaga. I know that sounds like it would be a crazy paring but I believe it works wonderfully!
